MLC Bike Bus March 16th Lead Schedule

Hopefully when I load this new post the bike school bus movie that we made will appear.

Mostly for fun, but also a failed attempt to get it into a local Filmed By Bike venue, this short short is not only a testament to the fallacy of our beliefs on safety that keep us in our cars, but also to the uncompromised abilities that our kids show when given the opportunity to grow.

My byline: “On their ho hum bike-to-school commute these kids dream of some of the “other” bike culture in their fair city of Portland.”

While definitely not “ho hum” the commuter cyclist is definitely different than some of the other bike culture that we see around. It was fun to exploit it all a bit!

Week after next is SPRING BREAK!!! Perhaps there will be good weather for a family bike trip down the Springwater Corridor to Sellwood. Enjoy!!

The lead schedule is as follows:

  • Mon- A.M. Tracy, P.M. Angela
  • Tues – A.M. Tracy, P.M. Brie 4:15
  • Wed – A.M. Tracy, P.M. Tracy
  • Thurs – A.M. Dallas, P.M. Clay
  • Fri – A.M. Tracy, P.M. Clay

See you on the bus!

MLC Bike Bus March 9th Lead Schedule

One of the great things about being a commuter cyclist in our city is that you realize how much there really is to see, and investigate.

When we stop at the top of the Broadway Bridge after school, we take the time to see what’s new with the river and the surroundings.   Something I’ve always wondered and posed the question to the kids and other parents is: why do tugboats seem to pull more than they tug, and how do they do it?

I found this great blog about tugboat anatomy.  This guy answers those two questions right at the outset, plus he writes about the history of tugboats and what they look like from the inside.  We always see these boats on the river, so it was interesting to me, and may be to you.   Pass on to the kids.

The lead schedule is as follows:

  • Mon- A.M. Travis, P.M. Tracy
  • Tues – A.M. Tracy, P.M.  Brie 4:15
  • Wed – A.M. Tracy, P.M. Angela
  • Thurs – A.M. Travis, P.M. Brie
  • Fri – A.M. Tracy, P.M. Angela

See you on the bus!

MLC Bike Bus March 2nd Lead Schedule

Okay you guys! Rock climbing at REI was a hit. We’ve got some great photos. Check them out here. 2 breakfast on the bridges in one week, yikes! The sugar in those doughnuts….

The bike bus movie viewing was fun this evening and almost everyone was there, including drivers, cameramen and child actors. We’ll see if it makes it to the Filmed By Bike cut.

Let’s review with the kids again some safety. I was able to ride as a 3rd adult in the midsection of the bus this week and noticed some things:

1st Laziness. The kids are just following through the stops without looking for their own safety. They HAVE to be their own vehicle in this regard.

2nd Dangly things. Backpack straps, shoelaces, etc. Potential pavement burn, not to mention if getting caught while in some of our traffic cross points.

3rd Chattiness. It’s great that the kids feel they can chat and we do it too, BUT the sweep adult has to be aware of car backs and what the kids are up to throughout the ride. They are the only adult eye that can see everything. If we can chat we need to be able to cut it with vocal riding commands.

That being said, all is well and we have now 2 of our kids doing lead in the afternoon. Awesome. Let’s remind them that the bus goes no faster than the slowest rider. (Sometimes that’s me.) At this point, let’s not have them lead in the mornings at the Flint & Broadway exchange.

The lead schedule is as follows:

  • Mon- A.M. Tracy, P.M. Tracy
  • Tues – A.M. Scott, P.M. Brie 4:15
  • Wed – A.M. Tracy, P.M. Angela
  • Thurs – A.M. Dallas, P.M. Clay
  • Fri – NO SCHOOL

See you on the bus!
