MLC Bike Bus November 17th Lead Schedule

So last week you all got pretty wet. One of our bike bus parents has made some suggestions for the kids to make sure they are not sitting in cold/wet clothes during the school day. I’ve posted his comments on the routemap comments. Please respond there with thoughts to improve the wet weather ride.

While you haven’t seen me out there these past couple of weeks, I have been working on the REI project. The meeting went well and I expect an outline of events from them in the next couple of weeks beginning in January. Here are the things we agreed on:

  • Fridays after school, once a month. ( I lobbied for a bike maintenance afternoon first)
  • Rock climbing
  • Luncheon
  • ?? (Other ideas)

Also, a punch card idea which would allow the kids to get a “free” something after so many rides to and from school. I suggested fenders, lights, bells…

And, the jackets! This is an involved process that requires me to work with a non-profit. REI can’t donate to individuals. So, of course, I’m targeting the BTA to house the donations and distribute jackets. The most likely timeline for this is, unfortunately fall of 2009.

We also talked about getting more of the neighborhood schools involved, ie Emerson, Chapman, others(?), establishing the safest routes to/fro. I’m looking for a contact for Chapman. I’m also looking for a parent, teacher, school official for MLC to be the SE coordinator. If you have any ideas please, please pass them on!!

This week’s lead schedule as follows (Gentlemen, please remember your legs are longer and steeds swifter than the kids’!):

  • Mon- A.M. Lisa, P.M. Lisa
  • Tues – A.M. Scott, P.M. Tracy (3:15), P.M. Angela (4:15)
  • Wed – A.M. Angela, P.M. Tracy
  • Thurs – A.M.Scott, P.M. Dallas
  • Fri – A.M. John, P.M. John

See you on the bus

MLC Bike Bus November 10th Lead Schedule

This past week our family was able to view the pre-release of a movie documentary called “Veer.”  A movie that covers 7 local figures in the biking community, it ties most everyone from the zoobombers and sprockettes to bikers killed on the road and the family they leave behind. The work of the BTA in legislature is also covered, talking about the challenges from the social need to legal protection.  It wraps up with the success of personal stories, to getting the vulnerable roadway user bill, and 4 others, passed last session.  It tries to tie together the different cultures of cycling in Portland with some interesting effects.

As you know from my talking to you regulars about field trips to events, it would be fun to expose the kids to the different cultures of bicycling that we have here in Portland.   Right now they are “urban commuter cyclists.”  There is an opportunity here to let them see what exactly they are in the big picture as well.  To that effect, please RSVP to me directly for the Saturday, December 6th Cyclocross event at Portland Meadows! We’ll talk about the details.
I’m also asking for input before Wednesday’s meeting with REI outreach.  Our meeting is for 2009 sponsorship of the bike bus.  What opportunities do you see?

Great 4 day weekend!  This week’s lead schedule as follows:

  • Mon- NO SCHOOL
  • Tues – NO SCHOOL
  • Wed – A.M. Scott, P.M. Tracy
  • Thurs – A.M. Tracy, P.M. Angela
  • Fri – A.M. Scott, P.M. Lisa

See you on the bus!

MLC Bike Bus November 3rd Lead Schedule

Even with the rain, we have the best climate, in my own “can’t ride when it’s over 80 degrees” opinion, for biking.

Don’t let the kids nag you out of getting on the bike in the rainy, cold, dark morning.  Sometimes we spice it up a bit before take off with a cup of cocoa.

Here are some tips via Jonathon Maus @ on rainy weather riding.  Thanks Jonathon!

I’ll keep you informed about my dealings with REI and the next field trip.

This week’s lead schedule as follows:

  • Mon- A.M. Lisa, P.M. Lisa
  • Tues – A.M. Scott, P.M. Tracy (3:15), P.M. Angela (4:15)
  • Wed – A.M. Scott, P.M. Tracy
  • Thurs – A.M. Tracy, P.M. Lisa
  • Fri – A.M. Angela, P.M. Angela

See you on the bus!
